Archaeological studies have been happening on Easter Island for years; however, most have focused on the monolithic statues (moai) and ceremonial shrines (ahu).
Petroglyphs are located in every sector of the island, however, little attention has been directed towards the island’s petroglyphs and rock art in general. They are generally found on lava flow (papa) or smooth basalt boulders. Unfortunately, many are eroded. The paintings that have been studied have survived in caves or in some of the stone houses at Orongo where they are protected from the elements.
We do know that the petroglyphs and rock paintings were important, sacred images to the ancient Rapa Nui. Although not as well known as the great statues, they can still be appreciated.
