Part 1: How to Enhance your Solo Travel Experience

It’s empowering to push yourself out of your comfort zone. I’ve rounded up some solo travel ideas to make the most of your experience. Part 1. Read on to find out what they are!

The ability to be okay with being by yourself and to not need constant stimulation and company, is extremely empowering.

Traveling solo is a different experience for each person and everyone has their own comfort with time spent alone. Personally, I probably lean more towards being introverted. I tend to do my best work alone without distractions, I need time to myself to recharge and I really prefer to travel alone or just with one other person.

Things to help enhance your solo travel experience

  • Enjoy a meal at a restaurant solo

For me, initially this idea brought back feelings of being the new kid in middle school, looking for a table to sit at. Sitting alone at an outdoor cafe can seem a bit nerve-wracking at first, but if you can get over the initial panic, there’s real beauty and self-confidence to be found in moments of solitude like this.

One of the best things people can do when they travel is to take advantage of their alone time. People are so often intimidated about being alone - don’t be! You observe things a lot differently solo and it creates more opportunities for you to meet new people, too.

  • Learn something new

Traveling the world and learning new things basically go hand-in-hand whether you're traveling solo or in a group. It just comes with the territory. There are new things to see around every corner and new cultures and experiences to immerse yourself in.

Learning can start before you even leave home. Go ahead and grab a book (or ebook) about where you're traveling to and read about your destination so you have a little background knowledge before you arrive.

  • Try something that's foreign to you

It could trying a brand-new local dish or delicacy or even trying to order said dish in the native language, just try it. If you really want to take it even further, have you never though you'd take a hot air balloon ride? How about bungee jumping? I've found that pushing myself out of my comfort zone usually leaves me totally changed for the better.

  • Have a moment all to yourself for yourself

Who doesn’t love a bit of self care while seeing the world? Your moment all to yourself can be anything that fills you with joy and is just for you. Moments like these are great for slowing down and just listening to yourself. Ask yourself, what at this moment could I do that would just fill me with joy. It forces you to look within and then outward at all of the wonders around you.
